Commissioner Emeritus Selig to be honored by U.S. Army

Longtime Commissioner will receive Outstanding Civilian Service Award

Baseball Commissioner Emeritus Allan H. (Bud) Selig today will receive The Outstanding Civilian Service Award, the third highest honor that the United States Army can bestow upon a private citizen, at a ceremony at Whipple Field, Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, Virginia. The presentation will be made by General Raymond T. Odierno, the U.S. Army's 38th Chief of Staff.

"Receiving the United States Army's Outstanding Civilian Service Award is a great honor," Commissioner Emeritus Selig said. "It is truly a humbling experience to receive such a prestigious award from those who have done so much to protect our country and our way of life."

The Outstanding Civilian Service Award is for outstanding service by a civilian who makes a substantial contribution or is of significance to the Army or to a major Army command.

The U.S. Army cites Commissioner Emeritus Selig as follows: "Under your leadership, Major League Baseball has continued its long tradition of meaningful support for our Soldiers and their Families. The various charitable initiatives undertaken by Major League Baseball have helped to raise awareness of Veterans' issues and further strengthened the bonds between our Army and the American People. Your exceptional contributions made a real and lasting impact on the lives of our Soldiers, Veterans and their Families."
