Colorado Rockies select infielder Tyler Nevin in Competitive Balance Round A; pick right-handed pitcher Peter Lambert in second round

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona - With the 38th overall pick in the 2015 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Monday, in Competitive Balance Round A, the Colorado Rockies selected infielder Tyler Nevin from Poway (Calif.) High School near San Diego.

The club also selected a Californian with their second-round selection as the 44^th pick overall, right-handed pitcher Peter Lambert from San Dimas High School.

The 18-year-old Nevin, at 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, hit .409 with seven homers and 22 RBI. He had 15 doubles, scored 41 runs and walked 28 times.   MLB.com had Nevin ranked as the 49th-best prospect in the nation, while Baseball America had him at No. 87.

Tyler is the son of former Major League infielder Phil Nevin, who was selected as the No. 1 overall pick by Houston in 1992 out of Cal State Fullerton and went on to a 12-year career that included stints with the Astros, Detroit, Anaheim, San Diego, Texas, Chicago Cubs and Minnesota.

Lambert, who helped lead San Dimas to a No. 1 USA Today Super 25 ranking, was a 2015 Perfect Game Second Team All-American and was named California All-Region First Team. He was a perfect 13-0 with a 0.34 ERA in 2015 as San Dimas advanced to the 2015 CIF Southern Section Division 3 semifinals.

Also 18 years old, Lambert was ranked 48^th by Baseball America and 50^th by MLB.com. He owned an 11-2 record as a junior with 102 strikeouts in 83 innings last season, leading San Dimas to the 2014 CIF Southern Section Division 4 quarterfinals.

The Rockies had four selections on the first day of MLB's annual amateur draft, including two in the first round.   They selected infielder Brendan Rodgers (Lake Mary (Fla.) High School) with the third overall pick and took right-handed pitcher Mike Nikorak (Stroudsburg (Pa.) High School) with the 27^th pick as compensation for free-agent outfielder Michael Cuddyer.
