Cubs claim reliever Leathersich off waivers

The Cubs have claimed left-hander Jack Leathersich off waivers from the Mets.

Leathersich, 25, went 0-1 with a 2.31 ERA in 17 relief appearances for the Mets last season, which was his first in the Major Leagues. He struck out 14 batters in 11 2/3 innings and did not allow a run in 14 of his 17 innings before requiring Tommy John surgery at the end of July.

He was selected by the Mets in the fifth round of the 2011 Draft out of the University of Massachusetts-Lowell.

Chicago's 40-man roster now stands at 32 players.
