Cubs place catcher Clevenger on DL; recall Castillo from Triple-A

PHILADELPHIA – The Chicago Cubs today placed catcher Steve Clevenger on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to April 26) with a right oblique strain, and recalled catcher Welington Castillo from Triple-A Iowa.

Castillo, who will wear uniform number 53, is available for tonight’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.

With Iowa this season, Castillo is batting .320 (16-for-50) with four doubles, two home runs and eight RBI in 16 contests. The right-handed batter is 5-for-10 (.500) against lefties and 11-for-40 (.275) against right-handed pitchers. His eight walks contribute to a .435 on-base percentage, and while behind the plate he has thrown out seven of 14 baserunners attempting to steal.

Castillo hit .286 (65-for-227) with 38 runs, nine doubles, 15 home runs and 35 RBI for Iowa last season, earning Pacific Coast League mid-season All Star honors. All told, he owns a .269 average (474-for-1,760) with 96 doubles, 58 home runs and 257 RBI in 514 career minor league games since signing with the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent in December of 2004.

This marks the third-straight season Castillo, who turned 25 on April 24, will see time on the big league roster after making his debut in 2010 (seven games played) and appearing in four games for Chicago last season. He owns a .242 batting average (8-for-33) with four doubles, one home run and five RBI in 11 major league contests.

Clevenger, 26, is hitting .500 (11-for-22) with five doubles and two RBI in 10 games for Chicago this season after breaking camp with the big league club for the first time in his career.
