Cubs reportedly reach deal with third-rounder Zagunis

CHICAGO -- The Cubs have reportedly signed third-round pick Mark Zagunis of Virginia Tech to a $615,000 deal, which is under the $714,900 pick value.

MLB.com's Jim Callis reported the signing. Jason McLeod, Cubs director of player development and scouting, would not confirm the signing, saying Zagunis still needs to undergo a physical.

Zagunis, a finalist for the Johnny Bench award, presented to the top collegiate catcher, was a three-year starter at Virginia Tech.

Zagunis was the only player in the ACC at the end of the regular season with at least 20 multihit games and more than 10 multi-RBI games. For the year, he led Virginia Tech with a .330 batting average, 44 runs scored and 69 hits, and was second in slugging percentage (.426), RBIs (39), doubles (10), triples (two), home runs (two), total bases (89), walks (32), and stolen bases (16).

• Jake Stinnett, the Cubs' second-round pick in the First-Year Player Draft, gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks over six innings, striking out two, in Maryland's 5-4 win over Virginia in the NCAA Super Regional. The Terrapins are one win away from reaching the College World Series.
