Olt may be in cast for up to four weeks

CHICAGO -- Cubs third baseman Mike Olt wore a blue cast on his right arm that extended from his hand over his elbow while he was in the clubhouse Saturday morning.

Olt said the long cast prevents him from twisting his arm. He expects to wear the cast for about 3-4 weeks for the hairline fracture in his right wrist. The Cubs placed him on the 15-day disabled list on Friday, retroactive to Wednesday, and promoted their top prospect Kris Bryant from Triple-A Iowa.

"Hopefully, the cast will be off in 3-4 weeks and then start my rehab from there," Olt said. "It shouldn't be too hard of a rehab, get my arm ready. The wrist should be feeling better they said by then."

Olt was injured when he was hit by a pitch on the wrist on April 11 against the Rockies. After that game, he played with the injured wrist, going 0-for-3 as a pinch-hitter and made two appearances at third base.

"It wasn't fun," he said. "It could have been a lot worse. At the end of the day, even though I'm in a cast, I just have to look at the positive. Nothing structurally wrong with ligaments or anything like that."

Olt saw a hand specialist on Thursday that revealed the damage.

"We did a different kind of X-ray when I was in Colorado, and my pain wasn't too bad, so I guess we didn't look into it further and then it just didn't progress as well as we thought, so we did an MRI," Olt said.

Olt is 2-for-15 with one home run this season.

"It's disappointing," Olt said. "Obviously, you work hard in the offseason to play and you want to play the whole season. It happens in baseball. There's nothing you can do, nothing I could have done differently that wouldn't allow this to happen."
