D-backs add Langwell as part of Kubel deal

PHOENIX -- The D-backs added Matt Langwell to the roster Monday, one day after receiving him as the player to be named in the deal that sent outfielder Jason Kubel to Cleveland.

Langwell, 27, was 3-4 with two saves and a 2.24 ERA for Triple-A Columbus at the time of the deal. He appeared in five games with the Indians this year, going 1-0 with a 5.06 ERA.

"I was in Columbus yesterday afternoon and found out that I'd been traded over," Langwell said.

The D-backs dealt Kubel to Cleveland last Tuesday, but Langwell did not realize he was the player to be named at that time.

"I wasn't sure," Langwell said. "I had been told at that point [by the Indians] that I wasn't going to be going up in September, so at that point I was kind of hoping to maybe get somewhere and get a fresh start and try to help a team in September."

Langwell found a familiar face in Arizona left-hander Tony Sipp, who played with Langwell in the Cleveland organization.

"I pretty much know he's a control-guy fastball, keeps it down in the zone," D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said. "When he's here, we'll take a look."
