D-backs lash 18 hits in Game 1 win over Rox
DENVER -- Mark Trumbo hit a two-run homer and Aaron Hill added a long three-run shot and tied his career high with four RBIs in the D-backs' 13-7 victory over the Rockies in the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday at Coors Field.
The D-backs, who ended a three-game skid and pushed the Rockies to a season-high sixth straight defeat, took advantage of lefty Tyler Matzek (2-1), whose two innings marked, statistically, the wildest starting performance in the last 15 years.
Matzek had as many walks (six) as outs, and gave up four runs on three hits -- including Trumbo's homer. According to ESPN Stats & Info, his 34.5 strike percentage (20 of 58 pitches) was the lowest of any starter since the start of 2000 who threw a minimum of 50 pitches.
"My [pregame] bullpen [session] wasn't bad -- I've had worse and pitched better, but I got out there and lost the feel of the fastball," Matzek said.
Hill's three-run shot came in a five-run fourth against reliever Christian Bergman and went an estimated 437 feet, according to Statcast..
D-backs starter Josh Collmenter, who allowed 10 hits and five runs in seven innings for the win, held the Rockies scoreless until Justin Morneau homered to center to lead off the fifth. Morneau's homer, the first of three for the Rockies, ended an 0-for-15 slump.
"They did a great job of keeping their foot on the gas," Collmenter said of his offense. "Anything can happen in this park. No lead is ever safe. So it was fun to see them to keep having good at-bats and continue to put runs up."

Could've been worse: Matzek walked three with one out in the first but struck out Yasmany Tomas, who kept the bat on his shoulder the whole time, and forced Hill to line out to center. Power in the two-hole: D-backs manager Chip Hale decided to do something a little different with his lineup, batting Trumbo second. It paid dividends in the second inning when with Matzek on the verge of working out of a second straight jam, Trumbo connected on his third homer of the season.

Saving the bullpen: With 18 innings on the docket for the day, Collmenter did not tax the bullpen. Instead the right-hander managed to pitch the seven solid innings, which left plenty of fresh arms for Game 2. More >

Streaking and trotting: Rockies catcher Nick Hundley homered off Collmenter in the seventh to extend his hit streak to a career-best 10 games. He added an RBI double in the eighth.

Drew Stubbs hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning for the Rockies. On the season, he's 2-for-26, with both of his hits leaving the yard.

WHAT'S NEXT
D-backs: After Wednesday's twin bill, the D-backs return home to open a four-game series vs. the Padres on Thursday at Chase Field. Rubby De La Rosa will get the ball for Arizona in his second start against San Diego this season.
Rockies: After Wednesday's doubleheader, the Rockies will take Thursday off before playing host to the Dodgers on Friday. Righty Eddie Butler (2-2, 3.81 ERA) will start against Dodgers lefty Brett Anderson (1-1, 4.21 ERA), who spent last season with the Rockies but was on the disabled list much of the time.
