D-backs select 30 players on third day of 2013 First-Year Player Draft

(PHOENIX) - The Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks) selected 30 additional players in rounds 11-40 of Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft today, according to D-backs' Director, Scouting Ray Montgomery. Of the 41 picks over the last three days, the D-backs selected 3 catchers, 14 infielders, 8 outfielders, 2 left-handed pitchers and 14 right-handed pitchers. On Thursday, the D-backs selected University of Nevada right-handed pitcher Braden Shipley in the First Round (15^th overall), Marshall University right-handed pitcher Aaron Blair in the Competitive Balance Round-A (36^th overall) and Terrebonne High School (Houma, La.) outfielder Justin Williams in the Second Round.

"I feel like we accomplished exactly what we set out to do from the beginning. We've added an eclectic mix of players with different tools that play different positions." said Montgomery. "I can't thank everyone in the Scouting and Baseball Operations Departments enough for the work they've done. We have some original Diamondbacks on the scouting staff and we have some new additions, but they all really invest themselves into these kids and I can't commend them enough."

In the 34^th Round of today's draft, the D-backs selected Cory Hahn, who wears No. 34 for Arizona State University. During his freshman season, Hahn appeared in three games for the Sun Devils before a fracture to his C-5 vertebrae ended his college career. The Mater Dei High School Alum (Calif.) won gold with Team USA Baseball in 2010 and was named California's Mr. Baseball, California First-Team All-State, Orange County Player of the Year and Los Angeles Times Player of the Year honors prior to committing to play at Arizona State. Hahn was previously drafted by the Padres in the 2010 draft but did not sign and currently serves as a student coach for the Arizona State baseball team.

"It was a very emotional selection for us to make. When Ray Montgomery and his staff came up with the idea and presented it to me, it was a no-brainer," said D-backs President & CEO Derrick Hall. "It's not about us. It's really about Cory and his family. I was able to spend time with them right after the injury in his hospital room and he's a wonderful kid. We want to make this permanent. We don't want this to just be about the selection and him being a draft pick, but about him working in full-time employment with the Diamondbacks and hopefully we'll make that come to fruition for he and his family here soon."

Today's selections of note include:

• OF Jacob Cordero (11^th Round, 330^th overall) is a product of the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy who garnered Canada/Puerto Rico All-Region First-Team honors this season.
• OF Dane McFarland (12^th Round, 360^th overall) is a University of Oregon recruit, a 2013 Rawlings Second-Team All-American and a 2013 Perfect Game All-American Classic participant.
• INF Jordan Parr (15^th Round, 450^th overall), younger brother of D-backs prospect Josh Parr, was named to the All-Big Ten Conference Second-Team after hitting .305 (65-for-213) with 9 home runs, 38 RBI and 23 stolen bases for the Illini.
• C Elvin Soto (16^th Round, 480^th overall) batted .320 (71-for-222) with 13 doubles, 6 triples, 6 home runs and 43 RBI en route to being named to the All-Big East Conference First-Team.
• INF Randal McCurry (23^rd Round, 690^th overall) earned All-Big 12 Conference Second-Team honors for the second consecutive season after batting .314 (70-for-223) with 21 doubles, 3 home runs and 41 RBI.

This was the D-backs' 18^th First-Year Player Draft since being awarded an expansion team from Major League Baseball in 1995.
