De La Rosa, Sands officially join Red Sox
The August mega-deal saw Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford, Adrian Gonzalez and Nick Punto sent to the Dodgers in a huge salary-saving effort for Boston and a bold attempt to make the playoffs for Los Angeles.
De La Rosa, a 23-year-old right-hander, and Sands, a 25-year-old first baseman/outfielder, couldn't be sent to the Sox until the end of the season because they did not pass through waivers in August. That waiver period ended along with the regular season.
The Sox had already received first baseman James Loney, infielder Ivan De Jesus Jr. and right-hander Allen Webster in the deal.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox designated catcher Guillermo Quiroz for assignment. Quiroz appeared in two games for the Sox.
