Did you know? Ortiz's 500th home run
David Ortiz made history on Saturday, becoming the 27th Major League player to hit 500 career home runs. The 39-year-old veteran homered twice in the Red Sox's 10-4 win over the Rays at Tropicana Field.
Albert Pujols and Ortiz are the only two players to hit home runs No. 499 and 500 in the same game. Pujols did it on April 22, 2014. In both instances, the player homered in the first and fifth inning.
For Harmon Killebrew and Mark McGwire, joining the 500-homer club wasn't enough. They each hit their 501st long ball in the same game they mashed their milestone homer. Killebrew did it on Aug. 10, 1971, and McGwire achieved the feat on Aug. 5, 1999.

The following is a list of some additional facts and information surrounding the historic feat:
• Ortiz joins Albert Pujols (555) and Alex Rodriguez (684) as the only active players reach the mark, and is the 11th to do so since the turn of the century.
• The Red Sox are the first club to have four players reach the 500-home run milestone. Ortiz joins Jimmie Foxx (1940), Ted Williams (1960) and Manny Ramirez (2008).
• Ortiz is 27th on the baseball's all-time home run list, four shy of tying Eddie Murray for 26th. He's hit 442 homers with the Red Sox, landing him third on the club's all-time list behind Carl Yastrzemski (452) and Ted Williams (521).

• The next closest active players to 500 home runs are Adrian Beltre (408), Miguel Cabrera (407), Mark Teixeira (394), Carlos Beltran (388) and Aramis Ramirez (385).
• Saturday marked Ortiz's 50th career multi-homer game, the third-most by any player since he joined the league in 1997. Only Alex Rodriguez (59) and Albert Pujols (51) have had more multi-homer efforts.
• Ortiz now has 48 home runs against the Rays, his second-most against any one team. He's hit a personal-best 59 against the Blue Jays.

• The home runs were Ortiz's 279th and 280th on the road. His 33 homers at Tropicana Field are the most by a visiting player in the park's 18-year history.
• Only three other players have hit 500 or more home runs and won three World Series -- Reggie Jackson, Mickey Mantle and Babe Ruth.
• At 39 years and 298 days old, only Gary Sheffield, Willie McCovey, Eddie Murray and Ted Williams were older than Ortiz when they hit No. 500. Williams was the oldest at 41 years and 291 days.
• Though he hadn't hit a two-strike homer in exactly a month, both of Ortiz's home runs on Saturday came with two strikes. He last hit a two-strike home run on Aug. 12 against the Marlins, which also happened to be his last multi-homer game prior to Saturday. Only seven of his 32 home runs this season had come with two strikes before his two against the Rays.
• Of Ortiz's 500 home runs, 347 have come in games his team eventually won, while only 153 have come in losses.
• Ortiz has 34 home runs on the year. This is the ninth time in his 19 big league seasons that he's gone yard 30 or more times. His career-best is 54 in 2006.
