Smyly continues progressing toward return

ST. PETERSBURG -- Drew Smyly will continue his rehab Friday with a yet-to-be-determined Rays Minor League affiliate.

"Smyly's pitching, I just don't know where," Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash said. "They're going to factor in weather and all that stuff."

Smyly (torn left labrum) went on the disabled list on May 9. The left-hander has made one rehab start in his pursuit to return to the Rays' rotation. He is expected to throw four innings and approximately 60 pitches on Friday.

Smyly is 0-1 with a 2.70 ERA in three starts for Tampa Bay this season. Prior to the start of the season, he was penciled in as the team's No. 3 starter, but he began the season on the DL due to left shoulder tendinitis.

Meanwhile, outfielder Desmond Jennings will return to action on Friday, beginning a rehab assignment with Triple-A Durham.

"It will be kind of like the standard DH, play, off," Cash said. "Like how we built up [John] Jaso, very similar."

Jennings played in just 18 games before going on the DL on May 3 with left knee bursitis, which eventually mandated a clean-up surgery. If all goes well, he is expected to be back with the team by mid-August.
