Encarnacion out due to sore finger

NEW YORK -- Edwin Encarnacion was held out of the Blue Jays' lineup on Sunday afternoon against the Yankees because of a sore left middle finger.

Encarnacion aggravated the injury during an awkward swing in the sixth inning of Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader. It's the same ailment that caused him to miss two games at the end of July and four more in early August.

The Blue Jays don't believe it's a serious issue, and Encarnacion should be able to return in a couple of days.

"I think it's just going to be a day or two with the off-day tomorrow, so I would expect and hope that he's back during the Atlanta series at that point," Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos said Sunday morning. "We don't expect it to be too long."

The sore finger didn't seem to impact Encarnacion much at all during August. He finished the month hitting .407 with 11 homers, 35 RBIs and a 1.379 OPS. Even so, the Blue Jays are going to err on the side of caution to make sure it's not an injury that lingers for the remainder of the season.

With an upcoming three-game Interleague series in Atlanta starting on Tuesday, the club will platoon Justin Smoak and Chris Colabello at first base during Encarnacion's absence.
