Eligible to return Friday, Westbrook throws in 'pen

CINCINNATI -- Cardinals right-hander Jake Westbrook, who's been on the disabled list with a lower back strain, threw in the bullpen before Tuesday's game.

St. Louis manager Mike Matheny hadn't gotten an opportunity to learn how it went by the time he met with the media.

Westbrook was 7-8 with a 4.49 ERA in 18 starts and one relief appearance before going on the disabled list on Aug. 22. He is eligible to be activated Friday.
