Former A's First Baseman Kelvin Moore Passes Away

OAKLAND, Calif. - The Oakland Athletics have announced that former first baseman Kelvin Moore has passed away at the age of 57 in his home of Covington, Ga. Moore, a member of the A's 1981 American League West Champions, had been suffering from multiple illnesses during the past several years including diabetes. The cause of his death Sunday was cardiac arrest.

A native of Leroy, Ala., Moore was selected by Oakland in the sixth round of the 1978 amateur draft out of Jackson State University.   He made his rookie debut at 23 years old, batting .255 in 14 games for Billy Martin's club. Moore played three seasons (1981-83) for the Athletics-his only time in the major leagues-and had a .223 lifetime batting average with eight home runs and 25 RBI in 76 career games.

The former baseball All-American at Leroy (Ala.) High School is survived by his wife Patricia, daughters Chasity and Kim, and son Justin.
