Longtime Red Sox scout Bowers dies at 86

'Buzz' won scouting honors in 1994, 2012; was inaugural inductee into scouts' HOF

Charles "Buzz" Bowers, the longtime Red Sox scout who was one of the inaugural inductees into the Baseball Scouts Hall of Fame in 2008, died peacefully in his home in East Orleans, Mass., on Friday. He was 86.

Bowers joined the Red Sox in 1992 and signed players such as Lou Merloni, Carl Pavano, Brian Rose and Steve Lomasney during his tenure. He became regarded as one of the most dedicated scouts in baseball.

Just two years after joining Boston, Bowers was named the organization's Scout of the Year in 1994. At the Winter Meetings in 2012, he was named East Coast Scout of the Year.

Up until his passing, Bowers served as a part-time amateur scout for the Cape Cod League.

Before joining the Red Sox, Bowers spent time scouting for the Dodgers and Phillies, who he pitched for as a Minor Leaguer from 1950-57, during his more than 65 years in baseball.

Bowers is survived by his wife Virginia and their four daughters -- Debbie, Nancy, Lee Ann and Linda -- as well as eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
