Report: Kapler or Roberts will be LA manager
Dodgers' search has been trimmed to two with Black no longer in running
LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers have trimmed their manager finalists to Gabe Kapler and Dave Roberts, according to an ESPN tweet.
Bud Black, considered a finalist for the manager job, was to rejoin the Angels as a member of the front office, sources told MLB.com on Wednesday.
A decision is expected by the end of the week for selecting a replacement for Don Mattingly, who left last month and was hired to manage the Miami Marlins.
The 40-year-old Kapler, a protégé of Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman, is currently the club's director of player development. He has managed one season at Class A.
The 43-year-old Roberts, whose first everyday job in the Major Leagues came as a Dodgers outfielder, has been a bench coach of the San Diego Padres. He has never managed.
Kapler and Roberts would be the two survivors in a search that led to a reported nine candidates being interviewed. The others were Black, Darin Erstad, Bob Geren, Kirk Gibson, Dave Martinez, Ron Roenicke and Tim Wallach.
