SF rookie tosses season's first no-no; Miami slugger posts 5 HRs, 12 RBIs

Miami outfielder Giancarlo Stanton and San Francisco pitcher Chris Heston earned the National League Co-Player of the Week honors for their standout performances last week. Heston, a rookie, threw a no-hitter, while Stanton led the Major Leagues with five home runs and 12 RBIs.

Heston, who blanked the Mets on Tuesday, was the first rookie to throw a no-hitter since Clay Buchholz in 2007. Heston's was the 35th no-hitter by a rookie in Major League history and the third by a San Francisco rookie. Heston struck out a career-best 11 batters and didn't issue a walk, but he did hit three batters.

Heston is the first rookie pitcher in big league history to throw a no-hitter with at least 10 strikeouts and no walks. A 12th-round selection by the Giants in the 2009 MLB Draft, Heston leads Major League rookies in wins (six), innings (79) and strikeouts (72).

Stanton led the Majors in slugging percentage (1.280) and total bases (32) last week, and he ranked second among NL hitters in both batting average (.520) and on-base percentage (.586).

Stanton became the first player in Marlins history to slug at least nine home runs in a 12-game span. He achieved that feat between May 30 and June 11, and he had two four-RBI games last week.

Stanton has won the NL Player of the Week nod on two prior occasions in his career.
