Giants Bat Girl 'totally blessed' to get honor
Cancer survivor introduced before game, receives bat, jersey from Blanco
SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants welcomed a special guest to the field before Sunday's series finale against the Miami Marlins.
Richmond resident Sue Young was greeted by Gregor Blanco behind home plate as the 2015 Giants Honorary Bat Girl, which is part of MLB's effort to promote breast cancer awareness on Mother's Day.
"It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Young said. "It's an amazing experience."
Young shared the moment Sunday with her sister and the two close friends who nominated her for the honor. In January 2012, Young was diagnosed with breast cancer, but she said watching the Giants make their World Series run helped her fight through. Young finished treatment in August 2012 and is currently in remission.
"I don't even know how you can choose someone to win this," Young said. "Everyone who submitted stories should have won. I am completely and totally blessed to be here."
Blanco presented Young with a pink bat and a customized jersey to commemorate the occasion. Once the Giants and Marlins took the field, there were many pink cleats, wristbands and bats in action.
"I think the boys look better in pink anyways," Young said. "Right?"
