Giants re-sign right-handed relief pitcher Sergio Romo to two-year contract

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - The San Francisco Giants have re-signed right-handed relief pitcher Sergio Romo to a two-year contract, club Senior Vice President and General Manager Brian Sabean announced today. Per club policy, financial terms were not disclosed.

Romo, 31, went 6-4 with 23 saves and a 3.72 ERA (24er, 58.0ip) in 64 relief appearances in his seventh campaign with San Francisco last season. His 23 saves were tied for the 14th-most in the National League. Romo held right-handed batters to a .172 batting average, which was tied for the ninth-lowest figure among NL pitchers (minimum of 125 batters faced). He finished the season strong, allowing just two runs over his final 19.1 innings (0.93 ERA, 23 games).

The 2013 National League All-Star has appeared on the Giants' last three postseason rosters (2010, 2012 and 2014). He has gone 3-1 with a 2.11 ERA (5er, 21.1ip) in 25 career postseason appearances. Romo is also 4-for-6 in save opportunities, including recording the final out of the 2012 World Series at Detroit.

The Brawley, California native was selected by the Giants in the 28th round in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft. His 5.92 career strikeout per walk ratio is the third-highest among all Major League pitchers since his debut in 2008. From 2010-14 he ranks fourth among all Major League relief pitchers in WHIP (0.92) and baserunners per 9.0 innings (8.66). Overall, Romo has posted a career record of 31-21 with a 2.51 ERA along with 78 saves in 405 relief outings with San Francisco.
