Giants Select RHP Tyler Beede with Their First Round Selection in 2014 MLB Draft
The San Francisco Giants selected Vanderbilt University right-handed pitcher Tyler Beede in the first round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft, the club announced today.
The 6-foot-4, 215-pound right-hander posted an 8-7 record with a 3.20 ERA (35er, 98.1ip) and 106 strikeouts in 16 games this season for Vanderbilt. Beede held opponents to a .210 batting average against and struck out 9.7 batters per 9.0 innings during his junior year. His season continues this weekend when Vanderbilt squares off against Stanford in the NCAA Super Regionals with the winner of the best of three series advancing to the College World Series.
During his sophomore season, Beede led NCAA Division I with a school-record 14 victories and was one of three finalists for the Golden Spikes Award. He was named a first team All-American according to the NCBWA, a second team All-American by Collegiate Baseball, ABCA, Perfect Game and Baseball America.
As a Freshman, the Massachusetts native earned SEC All-Freshman team honors, as he went 1-5 with a 4.52 ERA (36er, 71.2ip).
Beede is just the 18th player selected in the first round of two different June Drafts, as he was also picked 21st overall by the Toronto Blue Jays out of Lawrence Academy in Auburn, Massachusetts in 2011.
With the 52nd pick in the draft, the Giants selected catcher Aramis Garcia out of Florida International University.
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound junior batted .368 (60-for-163) with 34 runs, 14 doubles, eight home runs and 37 RBI this past season. He was named the Conference USA Player of the Year, along with First Team All C-USA honors. A Johnny Bench Award Watch List semifinalist for the second-consecutive season, Garcia led C-USA in batting average (.368), slugging percentage (.626) and finished second in on-base percentage (.442).
The Pembroke Pines, Florida native was named FIU's Male Student Athlete of the Year and was named to the Conference USA All-Academic team.
This marks the second time Garcia has been drafted, as he was taken in the 20th round of the 2011 draft by the St. Louis Cardinals, but did not sign.

Tonight's portion of the draft included only the first round, Competitve Balance Round A, the second round and Competitive Balance Round B...the draft will resume tomorrow beginning at 10 a.m. PT with rounds three through 10, and then Saturday, June 7 will cover rounds 11 through 40.
