Giants sign Ryan Vogelsong to two-year contract

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – The San Francisco Giants have agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Ryan Vogelsong on a two year contract with a club option for 2014, club Senior Vice President and General Manager Brian Sabean announced today. Per club policy, financial terms were not disclosed.

Named to his first-ever All-Star team in 2011, Vogelsong went 13-7 with a 2.71 ERA in 30 games (28 starts) for San Francisco, by far his best season in his professional career. His 13 wins exceeded his victory total he compiled with Pittsburgh (10 wins) from 2001-06. The 2011 Giants’ “Willie Mac” Award winner also finished fourth in the National League in ERA behind only Los Angeles’ Clayton Kershaw (2.28) and Philadelphia’s Roy Halladay (2.35) and Cliff Lee (2.40).

Drafted by the Giants in the fifth round in 1998, Vogelsong was traded to Pittsburgh in a four-player deal in July 2001. He underwent Tommy John elbow surgery in 2002 and went 10-19 with a 6.00 ERA for the Pirates from 2001-06. The 34-year-old pitched in Japan from 2007-09 before playing in triple-A for the Phillies and Angels in 2010.
