Goldschmidt, Pollock finalists for Gold Gloves

PHOENIX -- D-backs first baseman Paul Goldschmidt and center fielder A.J. Pollock were named finalists for the Rawlings Gold Glove Award at their respective positions.

The Giants' Brandon Belt and the Dodgers' Adrian Gonzalez are the other finalists at first base, while Pollock is joined by the Pirates' Andrew McCutchen and the Reds' Billy Hamilton.

The award winners will be announced on Nov. 10 at 5 p.m. MST on ESPN.

Goldschmidt won a Gold Glove in 2013 and, this season, led all first basemen with 18 defensive runs saved, a metric compiled by The Fielding Bible.

"Since day one, his work ethic at first base is unmatched," D-backs manager Chip Hale said of Goldschmidt. "He tries to get better on a daily basis, whether it's improving his range, knowing the hitters ... He's just a really selfless guy. There were a couple of times there were balls that got by him that the official scorer gave hits on, and he was petitioning that they should be errors. So he wants to be better every day, and he works at it."

Goldschmidt has made the All-Star Game the past three seasons and was elected as the starting first baseman by fans for each of the last two Midsummer Classics.

Pollock was tied for fourth among Major League center fielders in defensive runs saved.

"He showed me over the year how dynamic he was in terms of saving us runs," Hale said. "I think our outfield as a whole was one of the best in the league, but if you look at all the metrics that we get, it was proven by that just how good A.J. was."

Pollock was elected to his first All-Star Game this year on the players' ballot. This year also marks his first as a Gold Glove finalist.

"He's the total package," Hale said. "He runs so well, but he also gets good jumps, takes good routes and he has an arm that is able to shut down baserunners from scoring or going from first to third. He's probably as complete of a center fielder that I have ever had as a coach."

The Rawlings Gold Glove Awards are decided by Major League managers and coaches, with collaboration from the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) to incorporate sabermetrics as a component of the award.
