Guzman thriving at plate despite Petco power drought

PHOENIX -- In case you're wondering, Padres infielder Jesus Guzman has nothing against playing games at Petco Park. In fact, he loves playing there, Guzman said Friday.

The numbers tell a different story, though.

After a pinch-hit home run in Thursday's victory over the Brewers, Guzman now has seven home runs on the season -- all coming away from the Padres home ballpark. In fact, 13 of Guzman's last 17 home runs have come away from home.

"I noticed that a couple weeks ago," Guzman said. "I don't know why it's been like that."

In 2011, his first season with the Padres, Guzman had four home runs at home and one on the road. A year ago, he had four at home and five on the road. This season, well, he's still searching for that initial home run in San Diego.

"It's weird because my first year, I hit more at Petco Park," Guzman said.

Guzman might be sorry to see July go, as he took a .309 average with four home runs and 12 RBIs in 55 at-bats into Friday's game against the D-backs.

Guzman has made a slight adjustment in his setup that has allowed him to see the ball better in recent weeks, he said.

"No more leg kick, but it's a foot tap now," Guzman said. "I can see the ball better. It's funny because I have always had good numbers in my career with the leg kick."

Each of Guzman's first five hits since the All-Star break have gone for extra bases -- three doubles, two home runs.
