Tribe notches several statistical feats in 2015

CLEVELAND -- The Indians, who ended the year with a 3-1 win over the Red Sox on Sunday, fell short of expecations this season, but that did not stop the team from excelling in a number of facets. Cleveland's rotation was overpowering, and a handful of position players turned in seasons potentially worthy of offseason accolades.

Here is a glance at some statistical feats accomplished by the 2015 Tribe:

• The Indians became the first team in American League history to have four pitchers with at least 170 strikeouts. Corey Kluber (245), Carlos Carrasco (216), Danny Salazar (195) and Trevor Bauer (170) each reached that plateau. Only the 1990 Mets and '69 Astros can also claim that accomplishment.

• Cleveland set an all-time record in 2014 with 1,450 strikeouts as a pitching staff. This season's 1,407 punchouts rank fourth on the all-time chart (third in AL history). The Indians' rate of 8.84 strikeouts per nine innings ranks second all-time in Major League history behind the '14 Indians (8.89).

• The Tribe's rotation established a club record with 969 strikeouts, which ranks fourth in baseball history and second in AL history behind only the 2013 Tigers (981). The 8.91 strikeouts per nine innings turned in by the rotation is second in baseball history behind the 2014 Indians (8.92).

• Kluber and Carrasco became the first Indians' teammates to each surpass 200 strikeouts in the same season since Sam McDowell and Luis Tiant achieved the feat in both 1967 and '68. Those are the only three such occurrences in franchise history.

• Kluber's 18 strikeouts against the Cardinals on May 13 tied Cleveland's club record for a regulation game. Bob Feller also fanned 18 on Oct. 2, 1938. Kluber joined Randy Johnson (Sept. 27, 1992) as the only pitchers in baseball history to have 18 or more strikeouts in an outing consisting of no more than eight innings.

• Carrasco set a team record for most strikeouts in a no-hitter or one-hit shutout with 15 against the Royals on Sept. 25.

• Outfielder Michael Brantley finished as the Major League leader in doubles (45). He is the first Indians player to lead baseball in doubles since 2006, when Grady Sizemore had 53. Brantley is the first Indians hitter to lead the Majors outright in doubles since Lou Boudreau did so with 45 in 1947.

• Rookie of the Year candidate Francisco Lindor paced Major League rookies with a .313 average and ranked first among AL rookies with a 4.6 WAR, according to Fangraphs.com. Lindor joined Earl Averill (1929) as the only rookies in Indians history to hit at least .300 with 10 steals, 10 homers and 100 hits.
