Hamilton named Ohio's Sportscaster of Year

CLEVELAND -- A generation of Indians fans can probably hear Tom Hamilton's voice when recalling the Indians' great moments. There were plenty more last season, when Cleveland pulled off an assortment of wild finishes in an exciting run to the postseason.

Hamilton has once again been rewarded for his part in Indians baseball, being named Ohio's Sportscaster of the Year for 2013 this week by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. It marks the sixth time that Hamilton has taken home the honor.

Among Hamilton's memorable calls this past year was his reaction to Jason Giambi's two-run, pinch-hit, walk-off home run against the White Sox on Sept. 24. As the veteran slugger disappeared into a pile of teammates at home plate and Progressive Field roared with delight, Hamilton declared, " A Mardis Gras in September in Cleveland! Oh, what a mob scene!"

The upcoming season will be Hamilton's 24th in the radio booth for the Indians, who added him to their broadcast team in 1990 after he spent three summers calling games for Triple-A Columbus. Hamilton initially was paired with Herb Score, but assumed the lead play-by-play role in '98 following Score's retirement.

A native of Wisconsin, Hamilton resides on Cleveland's west side in Avon Lake, Ohio, with his wife, Wendy. They have four children, including 24-year-old son Nick, who was selected by the Indians in the 35th round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft and is in the team's farm system.
