Indians prospect Sheffield posts bond after arrest

CLEVELAND -- Indians pitching prospect Justus Sheffield was arrested and released on bond after an incident early Monday morning in his hometown of Tullahoma, Tenn.

"The organization is aware of the report involving Justus Sheffield," the Indians said in a statement. "We have spoken with Justus about the incident and are in the process of gathering additional information. Beyond that, we will not comment further until the legal process is completed."

According to a report in the Tullhoma News, the 18-year-old Sheffield, No. 7 among the Indians' Top 20 Prospects according to MLB.com, broke into a local residence around 4:30 a.m. ET on Monday. Sheffield, who was arrested along with two others, admitted to having had a few alcoholic drinks and told police officers that he wanted to discuss something with one of the home's residents.

Sheffield was arrested on charges of aggravated burglary and underage drinking, but he was released after posting a $5,500 bond. The pitching prospect is scheduled to appear in Coffee County General Sessions Court on Feb. 5.

Sheffield pitched for Tullahoma High School and was named the Gatorade National Player of the Year for the 2014 season. The Indians selected the left-handed pitcher with the 31st pick in the first round of the First-Year Player Draft last June. In eight games with the Arizona League Indians (rookie level), Sheffield went 3-1 with a 4.79 ERA, 29 strikeouts and nine walks in 20 2/3 innings.
