Indians sign veteran Marmol to Minors deal

The Indians announced on Friday that they have signed former closer Carlos Marmol to a Minor League contract.

Marmol has saved 117 games in parts of nine Major League seasons with the Cubs, Dodgers and Marlins. He was most recently with the Reds last year, but he did not appear in the big leagues with Cincinnati and was released in the offseason.

The 32-year-old Marmol posted an 8.10 ERA in 15 appearances for Miami, which released him on May 19, 2014 -- nine days before he signed with the Reds. The right-hander's best season came in 2010, when he posted a 2.55 ERA with 38 saves and 138 strikeouts in 77 2/3 innings for Chicago. He was also an All-Star with the Cubs during the '08 season.

Following that strong 2010 campaign, though, Marmol posted a 4.23 ERA with a 1.53 WHIP in 203 games between stints with the Cubs, Dodgers and Marlins in the 2011-14 seasons. For his career, Marmol has a 3.57 ERA with a rate of 11.6 strikeouts per nine innings across his 519 appearances. Along the way, he has also averaged 6.2 walks per nine innings.
