Walters recovering from car accident
Infielder's rehab from from shoulder surgery not expected to be delayed
CLEVELAND -- The Indians have indicated that infielder Zach Walters is doing fine in the wake of a recent car accident.
On Wednesday, the Indians sent out a brief statement that noted that Walters "is home, and is in good spirits" after being involved in an incident. The team added that it is still in the process of gathering as much information as possible.
The statement from the Indans also said: "Everything to this point has checked out fine. We will continue to stay in touch with him and monitor his situation."
Walters posted a photo of himself in the hospital on his private Instagram account. In the photograph, he wore a neckbrace and had a cut above his left eye. Walters also included two small photos of a damaged car -- first on the side of a road and then being taken away on a flat-bed tow truck.
Walters underwent surgery on his left shoulder on Oct. 2 to repair a torn labrum and is currently rehabbing from the injury. As of now, the Indians do not believe the accident will affect his rehab or timetable for return, which was an estimated five months at the time of his shoulder surgery.
The 26-year-old Walters sustained the shoulder injury while sliding hard across home plate in the eighth inning of Game 3 of the International League finals on Sept. 17.
In 91 games for Triple-A Columbus this past season, Walters hit .249 with 10 home runs, 21 doubles, 48 RBIs and a .726 OPS, while logging playing time at first base, second base, shortstop, third base and left field. He appeared in 12 games for the Indians, batting .133 with 15 strikeouts and no walks.
Walters has a .182/.233/.394 slash line in 82 career Major League games with the Nationals and Indians, who acquired him from Washington in exchange for shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera prior to the July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline in 2014.
