Shuck makes tumbling, barehanded grab

Right fielder's defense helps preserve Friday's 2-1 win over Tigers

CHICAGO -- With just two games left in the regular season, J.B. Shuck is making his last games in 2015 count.

In just his 29th start of the season, Shuck laid out his body to make a diving catch in Chicago's 2-1 victory over the Tigers on Friday.

Detroit's Dixon Machado likely thought he had a hit and a chance at sparking a rally with two outs in the seventh inning. Shuck, though, tracked down the ball and extended his body to try to catch it. The ball popped out of Shuck's glove as he fell to the ground, but he reached out to snare it with his bare hand to hang on to the ball.

He salvaged Chris Sale's career night, earning some recognition from the White Sox ace. Shuck's catch was one of a handful of strong defensive plays by Chicago, as Trayce Thompson's catch in the third inning and Alexei Ramirez's plays in the fifth and sixth also helped save the night.

"I know that I was very appreciative of that for sure," Sale said. "Even Trayce, if he doesn't throw that ball right on the money, and if they don't have that in the back of their mind that he can make that play, things might be different. Even Alexei making that great play at shortstop, you're talking about pitches and outs that matter and to be able to get this done the way we did it, collectively as a group, it was satisfying. It was great."
