Weaver tosses four as Long, Angels tee off on Tribe

Ace gives up three runs in longest spring start; outfielder goes 4-for-5 to pace offense

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Matt Long came close to a cycle, Collin Cowgill went yard, and the Angels scored runs in four consecutive innings to beat the Indians, 8-3, on Monday at Goodyear Ballpark.

Long, who is battling for a spot in Mike Scioscia's outfield, continued a monster spring with a 4-for-5 day. He doubled in the second inning against Indians starter Danny Salazar, bunted for an RBI single with two outs in the third, tripled in the fifth off Trevor Bauer and added a single in the ninth.

The Indians got on the board in the first inning against Angels starter Jered Weaver, scoring on a Jason Kipnis single and a Michael Brantley sacrifice fly. The Tribe added a run in the third inning on a fielder's-choice groundout by Carlos Santana.

The Angels poured it on after that, scoring once in the second on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Andrew Romine, adding two in the third on singles by C.J. Cron and Long, two in the fourth on a stolen base and throwing error and a Raul Ibanez sacrifice fly, and then three more in the fifth, including Cowgill's two-run homer.

Weaver made his longest outing of the spring, going 4 1/3 innings and giving up three runs on five hits while striking out five and walking two.

"In the first inning, he looked like he was really searching for some rhythm, but he picked it up and finished strong," said Scioscia.

Salazar, who is having his innings monitored by the Indians, made his first start of the Cactus League slate and went 1 2/3 innings, giving up one run on two hits while striking out two and walking two.

"I think he was a little excited. He was throwing pretty hard. I think it was 97, I think. That's pretty good. That's getting after it," said manager Terry Francona.

Bauer had his first rough day of the spring, giving up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits in two innings.

Offensively, other standouts for the Angels included Cron, the Angels' best power-hitting prospect, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI; Romine, who drew three walks, drove in two runs and scored one from the leadoff spot; and Grant Green, who went 2-for-4 and scored a run.

The Indians were paced by Kipnis, who went 3-for-3 with an RBI, and shortstop Erik Gonzalez, who had two doubles.

Up next: C.J. Wilson makes his third start of the spring on Tuesday, when the Angels host the Mariners at Tempe Diablo Stadium. Wilson, the Angels' No. 2 starter, is coming off throwing four hitless innings against the Dodgers, walking two and striking out four. Tuesday's contest, which starts at 1:05 p.m. PT and can be seen on FOX Sports West, is a designated "replay game" -- the eighth of at least 15 for the Angels this spring. The game will also be broadcast live on MLB.TV.
