Hahn, Vogt lead A's to easy win over Padres

SAN DIEGO -- Catcher Stephen Vogt hit a grand slam, and batterymate Jesse Hahn tossed 6 2/3 solid innings, as the A's throttled the Padres in a series-opening 9-1 Interleague victory at Petco Park on Monday night.

Vogt's second grand slam of the season and his career, which highlighted a five-run eighth inning against right-hander Cory Mazzoni, was his team-leading 12th home run.

"I just had a feeling he was going to try to throw a heater first pitch," said Vogt. "Guy throws hard, so I decided, 'Get your foot down, and if you see it, hit it.' He threw it and I didn't miss it."

Vogt finished the night with a career-high-tying five RBIs, having also notched a run-scoring single in a three-run third inning against Padres starter Tyson Ross, who was on the hook for four runs and seven hits in five frames against his former A's team. Ross also walked five batters, with two of them scoring.

The Padres were outhit, 13-5, on their first day of play under interim manager Dave Roberts, following the Monday morning dismissal of Bud Black, and stranded nine on base, finishing 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Friends and foes: Hahn had his way with his former team, limiting the Padres to just three hits -- one of which didn't leave the infield -- and one run. The right-hander, traded by San Diego in the Derek Norris deal in the offseason, struck out four and walked two in the win, his fourth of the season.

"His velocity was was 92-95 [mph], he had good stuff and a good breaking ball,'' Roberts said. "He kept us off-balance and did a good job pitching with a lead." More >

A grand day: Vogt entered the day with just three hits in 38 June at-bats, and he doubled that total by game's end, singling twice ahead of his homer while upping his season RBI total to 45, which leads the team. It was Vogt's second five-RBI game in his career, his other coming May 4 vs. the Twins. More >

On second thought: Roberts lost his first replay challenge, and that's a good thing. Umpires consulted replays and determined Will Venable was not hit by a Hahn pitch in the third. Venable stayed at the plate, and his RBI double was the Padres' first hit.

QUOTABLE
"It means he fits right in with the Oakland A's." -- A's manager Bob Melvin on Ben Zobrist, following Zobrist's four-walk night.

SOUND SMART WITH YOUR FRIENDS
A's starters are 11-6 with a 1.95 ERA over the last 22 games, and have allowed one run or fewer 13 times during that span.

MYERS OUT AGAIN
The Padres' Wil Myers returned to the disabled list on Monday with tendinitis in his left wrist. It's his second stint on the DL for the same injury. Myers was hitting .277 with five home runs and 19 RBIs.

WHAT'S NEXT
Athletics: Left-hander Scott Kazmir gets the start at Petco Park on Tuesday afternoon for a 12:40 p.m. PT Interleague matchup with the Padres. Kazmir will be facing San Diego for just the second time in his career and first since 2007.

Padres: The Padres wrap up their five-game homestand when right-hander Andrew Cashner (2-8) takes on the A's at 12:40 p.m. PT on Tuesday. Cashner is looking for his second win in his last three decisions.
