Joe Maddon's Latest Hair Statement

Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon has made several hair statements in the past, rocking a silver Mohawk during the Rays’ 2008 playoff run, followed by a dark black dye-job in August of 2009. Maddon is switching it up again for 2012, but this time it’s for a greater cause.

Last week, Maddon revealed his plan to shave his head as a tribute to children fighting cancer. He’ll be joined by a growing list of players, including Alex Cobb, Wade Davis, Sam Fuld, Brandon Gomes, Elliot Johnson, Matt Joyce, Cesar Ramos and James Shields and coaches Tom Foley and Dave Martinez. While describing the pitch he made to get his players and fellow coaches to participate, Maddon delivered one of the best quotes of Spring Training to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times:

"It's like Demi Moore in 'GI Jane' (right) — if you're good-looking, you're good-looking. Those of us who are not, we have something to be concerned with."

The shave will take place this Thursday and will benefit the Pediatric Cancer Foundation and the Vincent Lecavalier Pediatric Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at All Children’s Hospital.
