Jon Lester selected to 2014 American League All-Star team

BOSTON, MA - Red Sox left-handed pitcher Jon Lester was selected to the American League roster for Major League Baseball's 85th All-Star Game which will take place on Tuesday, July 15 at Target Field in Minneapolis, MN. He was selected by American League manager John Farrell.

The complete American and National League teams were announced today by Major League Baseball.

For Lester, 30, this is his third career All-Star selection, along with 2010 and 2011. He pitched a scoreless inning of relief in the 2010 contest at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, and did not appear in the 2011 exhibition at Chase Field in Arizona.

This season, he has gone 9-7 with a 2.73 ERA (37 ER/122.0 IP) and 122 strikeouts in 18 starts, allowing just 29 walks and 111 hits. Entering today, he ranked among American League leaders in innings pitched (4th), ERA (6th), wins (T-7th), strikeouts (7th), strikeouts per nine innings (9.0), strikeout-to-walk ratio (8th, 4.2), WHIP (9th, 1.15).

Among AL left-handers, only All-Stars Mark Buehlre and Scott Kazmir have more wins (both 10) and only All-Star David Price has more strikeouts (153).

Lester has not allowed an earned run in 16.0 innings over his last two starts and has given up only four earned runs over his last five starts beginning on June 12, with a 0.96 ERA (4 ER/37.2 IP) in that stretch.

Red Sox manager John Farrell will guide an All-Star Team for the first time after serving as pitching coach for the 2008 game in Yankee Stadium. He will be joined at this year's All-Star Game by his coaching staff, Arnie Beyeler, Brian Butterfield, Greg Colbrunn, Dana LeVangie, Torey Lovullo, Juan Nieves, and Victor Rodriguez. In addition, MLB has appointed Red Sox staff assistant Brian Abraham, the club's instant replay coordinator, to serve in that capacity for Farrell's AL squad.
