Rumor roundup: Angels eyeing Upton

The Angels could be looking to make a big addition to their lineup.

FOXSports.com reported on Tuesday that the Halos have been engaged in "ongoing conversations" with the representatives for free-agent left fielder Justin Upton. Meanwhile, another option for the team would be signing Jason Heyward to play right field, while shifting Kole Calhoun to the opposite corner.

The Angels have a major hole in left, a spot that produced a .216/.275/.317 line for them in 2015, with seven different players appearing in at least 10 games there. Upton, 28, has posted an .832 OPS over the past seven seasons, averaging 25 home runs. Heyward is two years younger and hit .293/.359/.439 with 13 homers and 23 steals for the Cardinals this year, while earning his third career Gold Glove Award.

Texas dangling Prince?
Prince Fielder was the American League Comeback Player of the Year in 2015, but the Rangers reportedly are now exploring the possibility of trading him.

A Dallas Morning News report on Tuesday indicated that the team is "surveying clubs' interest" in Fielder, which would require taking on much of the $90 million Texas owes him over the next five seasons, with the Tigers remaining on the hook for another $30 million. However, the Rangers aren't "getting much response," according to the report.

Fielder played only 42 games in 2014, his first year with the Rangers, undergoing season-ending surgery on a herniated disk in his neck that May. He rebounded this year at age 31, playing 158 games and batting .305/.378/.463 with 23 home runs and 98 RBIs. Still, Fielder spent only 18 games at first base, playing the rest as a designated hitter, and his OPS slipped from .924 in the first half to .742 in the second.

D-backs pursuing more pitching
Hours after they made the Zack Greinke deal official and before acquiring Shelby Miller from the Braves according to a source, the D-backs were "pretty close" to completing a deal with free-agent right-hander Mike Leake, according to an ESPN report. Early in the day, CBSSports.com had reported that the Cardinals also remained in the running, but that the D-backs held the advantage, as Leake pitched at Arizona State and still lives in Arizona.

A different ESPN report on Monday cited a source that believed Leake could wind up with a five-year deal in the $75-80 million range. Leake, 28, compiled a 3.59 ERA in 94 starts over the past three seasons.

Arizona starting pitchers finished 23rd in the Majors with a 4.37 ERA this season.

Fernandez available?
There continue to be mixed signals about Marlins ace Jose Fernandez, whose name has been popping up in trade rumors.

On one hand, Miami owner Jeffrey Loria told FOXSports.com on Tuesday that, "There is nothing I am thinking about doing at the moment with him."

On the other hand, MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reported that at least a dozen teams have checked in with the Marlins about Fernandez, although Miami is looking for a massive return that focuses on Major League players and close-to-the-Majors prospects. For example, the Dodgers could be a fit, if they are willing to part with a package that includes top prospects Kyle Seager -- who already has reached the big leagues -- and Julio Urias.

That sort of asking price prompted a rival team's executive to tell FOXSports.com that the Marlins "haven't proposed anything reasonable enough to make people think they want to deal."
