Kyle Hendricks of the Chicago Cubs voted National League Rookie of the Month for August

Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks has been voted the National League Rookie of the Month for August.

Hendricks, who made his Major League debut in July, led N.L. rookies in wins during his first full calendar month in the big leagues. The 24-year-old posted a 4-0 record while the Cubs went undefeated in all six of his August outings. Hendricks also led qualifying N.L. rookie pitchers with a 1.69 ERA (7 ER/37.1 IP) and ranked second in innings pitched and opponents' batting average (.206). The young right-hander collected 20 strikeouts last month, which was good for eighth among the Senior Circuit's rookie class, while walking just six.

Hendricks notched his fourth win of the month, improving to 5-1 this season, on August 18th with a 7.0-inning effort against the New York Mets at Citi Field. With the win, he became the first Cubs rookie pitcher to win four games in August since Pat Malone posted a 4-1 mark in August 1928. Hendricks' August record also marked the first time a Cubs rookie finished any calendar month with a perfect 4-0 mark since Vito Valentinetti accomplished the feat in June 1956. In his August 12th start, Hendricks tossed 7.1 shutout innings while fanning five en route to a 3-0 win over the N.L. Central-rival Milwaukee Brewers. The win came on the heels of a stellar 8.0-inning effort on August 7th at Colorado, in which the former Texas Rangers draft pick held the Rockies to two runs (one earned) on five hits in a 6-2 win. Hendricks started the month with a career-high 107-pitch outing on August 1st at Dodger Stadium, allowing just four hits and a walk across 7.0 innings of work in an 8-2 victory over the Dodgers. The decision marked the first career road win for the Newport Beach, California native. This is the first monthly award for Hendricks, who becomes the first Cubs player to be voted N.L. Rookie of the Month since Anthony Rizzo in July 2012. He is the first Cubs rookie pitcher to garner the honor since the award's inception in 2001.

Other rookies receiving votes included San Francisco's Joe Panik (.379, 13 R, 36 H, HR, 10 RBI, .416 OBP); Arizona's Ender Inciarte (.307, 15 R, 35 H, 2 HR, 11 RBI) and David Peralta (.257, 13 R, 27 H, 4 HR, 13 RBI); Philadelphia's Ken Giles (3-1, 1.93 ERA, 14.0 IP, 19 SO); Cincinnati's Billy Hamilton (.256, 17 R, 30 H, 4 2B, 3B, 12 SB); Hendricks' Cubs teammate, Jorge Soler (.533, 8 H, 3 HR, 7 RBI, 1.267 SLG, 4 G); and Kolten Wong (.261, 15 R, 29 H, 4 HR, 10 RBI) of the St. Louis Cardinals.

The National League Rookie of the Month for August, Kyle Hendricks, will receive a specially designed trophy, suitably engraved, to commemorate his performance.
