The trade also creates a vacancy in the Twins' rotation, which may be filled at least temporarily by Manship or Brian Duensing, who made a spot start against Cleveland on Sunday, which was when Liriano was scheduled to get the ball.
"Let [Duensing] run out there today," manager Ron Gardenhire said. "He's stretched out. ... We're bringing up Manship and we'll see where we go from there. He can go either way, too."
It will be Manship's second stint with Minnesota this season. He posted a 10.97 ERA over 10 2/3 innings in eight appearances before being sent back to Rochester on June 27. Manship owns a 6-2 record with a 2.35 ERA on the year for the Red Wings, but he's 2-1 with a 1.45 ERA over six starts since being optioned.
The 27-year-old was named the International League Pitcher of the Week on July 23.
