Mariners make 8 selections on Day Two of Draft

Seattle Mariners Director of Amateur Scouting Tom McNamara announced today that the club selected 8 players on the second day of Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft. Rounds 3 to 10 were conducted today and the draft will conclude with rounds 11-40 tomorrow. The Mariners have drafted 10 players combined in the first two days of the draft.

In the first 10 rounds, the Seattle Mariners selected 10 players including 4 pitchers (1 RHP, 3 LHP), 1 catcher, 3 infielders (1 3B, 2 SS) and 2 outfielders. All 6 position players selected were right-handed hitters. Seattle selected 8 college players and 2 high school players.

The Mariners selected 6 position players with their first 10 selections. The Mariners first three position players selected were each rated in the top 20 amongst position players heading into the draft by Baseball America.

The Mariners drafted outfielder Tyler O'Neill from Garibaldi Secondary School in Maple Ridge, British Columbia with their third-round pick (85th overall). O'Neill, who is a 5-foot-11, 205-pounds, was named 2013 Rawlings 3rd Team All-America and First Team All-Region (Canada/Puerto Rico Region). O'Neill played for the Langley Blaze, batting .455 (85x187) with 62 runs scored, 17 doubles, 8 triples, 12 home runs and 86 RBI in 89 combined games over the last two seasons, including batting .567 (35x59) with 7 doubles, 4 triples, 6 home runs and 47 RBI in 18 games in 2013. He also played for the Canadian Junior National Team in 2012 and was also a member of Team British Columbia that played in the 2012 Canada Cup Tournament in London, Ontario, Canada where he was named MVP in the Gold Medal game. O'Neill was rated at the 69th overall prospect by Baseball America heading into the 2013 draft. O'Neill's father Terry, is a former Mr. Canada.

Left-handed pitcher Ryan Horstman out of St. Johns University was the Mariners fourth-round selection. He earned Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America honors in 2013, going 6-6 with 2.33 ERA in 65.2 innings of work with the Red Storm. Horstman, who red-shirted the 2012 season, made 16 appearances this year, including 9 starts, and totaled 56 strikeouts, while limiting opponents to a .240 batting average. He concluded the regular season ranked fourth in the Big East in ERA, sixth in opponent batting average and tied for ninth in victories.

Shortstop Jack Reinheimer out of East Carolina University was the Mariners fifth-round selection (147th overall). Reinheimer hit .271 (60x221) with 32 runs scored, 9 doubles, 2 home runs, 21 RBI and 10 stolen bases during his junior season with the Pirates. Originally selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 31st round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft, but did not sign.

Corey Simpson, a catcher from Sweeny High School, was the Mariners sixth-round selection. Simpson was named a 2013 Rawlings 2nd Team All-America and First Team All-Region (Texas), after his senior season with the Bulldogs. Simpson represented Texas in the 2012 Area Code games in Long Beach, CA and was rated by Baseball America at the 23rd-best prospect out of Texas, including the 3rd-best catcher.

Left-handed pitcher Tyler Olson from the Gonzaga University was selected in the seventh round by the Mariners. Olson was name West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year, after going 9-4 with a 2.48 (23 ER, 101.2 IP) in 16 games, 14 starts as a fifth-year senior with the Bulldogs. He limited opponents to a .249 (94x378) average, while walking 31 and striking out 91. Olson, who was also named WCC Pitcher of the Month for April, finished the year with team-bests in ERA (2.09), record (9-3 overall) and shutouts (1). He had a 19.0 scoreless innings streak spanning four starts in April. He finished in the top five of all WCC pitchers in wins, innings pitched, strikeouts and complete games. The Spokane, WA, native is the fifth Zag to earn the Pitcher of the Year award. Olson was the only player with Washington ties, selected in the first 10 round of the 2013 First-Year Player draft by the Mariners. He was originally selected in the 20th round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft by the Oakland A's, but choose to return to school.

The Mariners selected Tyler Smith, a shortstop out of Oregon State University, with their eighth-round selection. Smith, who was named to the Pac-12 Conference's First-Team in back-to back seasons, hit .301 (58x193) with 45 runs scored, 7 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs and 24 RBI in 49 games with the Beavers during his senior season. Smith is back-to-back selections after being named first team in 2012. He missed 12 games midway through the season due to injury, and the Beavers went 7-5 in his absence but OSU was 38-5 with him in the lineup.

Left-handed pitcher Jacob Zokan out of College of Charleston was the Mariners ninth-round selection. He went 4-3 with 2.85 ERA in 17 games, 14 starts for Cougars during his senior season. Zokan limited opponents to a .261 average (81x310), while walking 15 and striking out 80. He led the team in ERA and strikeouts.

With their 10th round selection, the Mariners drafted right-handed pitcher Emilio Pagan out of Belmont Abbey College. He went 1-5 with 4 saves and 4.50 ERA (17 ER, 34.0 IP) in 9 games, 2 starts for the Crusaders during his senior season. In 2012, he recorded a team-high 13 saves, while tossing 21.1 scoreless innings in 18 relief appearances as a junior. Pagan also hit .287 (41x143) with 40 runs scored, 10 doubles, 3 triples, 4 home runs and 29 RBI in 43 games.

The Mariners made two selections yesterday, including first round selection third baseman DJ Peterson with the 12th overall pick. Peterson was named Mountain West Co-Player of the Year with teammate Mitch Garver for the second straight season in 2013. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound infielder won the MW overall triple crown for the second year in a row, batting .408 (89x218) with 68 runs scored, 25 doubles, 4 triples, 18 home runs and 72 RBI in 55 starts during his junior season. Peterson currently ranks third in the nation in home runs, while ranking fourth average (.408) and in RBI (72). In Baseball America's annual Best Tools survey of the top 100 prospects entering the draft, Peterson was named as the best pure hitter and the second-best power hitter and strike-zone judgment amongst all college players. Peterson was rated as the 15th-best prospect heading into the 2013 draft.

Peterson's brother Dustin a senior shortstop out Gilbert High School, was selected in the 2nd round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft by San Diego (50th overall). They are the first set of brothers to be drafted within the first two round in the same year since J.D. (Philadelphia) and Tim Drew (Cleveland) were both selected in the first round in 1997.
