Marlins acquire Telis, Ege from Rangers for Dyson

MIAMI -- In a move just prior to Friday's 4 p.m. ET non-waiver Trade Deadline, the Marlins sent right-handed reliever Sam Dyson to the Rangers in exchange for catcher Tomas Telis and Minor League left-handed reliever Cody Ege. Telis, 24, will join Miami, while Ege, 24, will be assigned to Double-A Jacksonville.

The 27-year-old Dyson was 3-3 with a 3.68 ERA over 44 innings this season with the Marlins. The righty pitched three seasons in Miami after being claimed off waivers from Toronto in January 2013. Dyson's best campaign came in 2014, when he went 3-1 with a 2.14 ERA in 31 appearances.

"It's never easy when you have to trade pieces away instead of having to add pieces this time of year," said president of baseball operations Michael Hill. "It's because something has not gone according to plan. This was not the plan when we put this club together in the offseason."

In 70 games for Triple-A Round Rock, the switch-hitting Telis hit .291 with five home runs and 15 doubles. He was recently called up to Texas, where he was 2-for-11 in six games. In 18 big league appearances in 2014, he hit .250 (17-for-68) with the Rangers.

"It will give us something we haven't had in a while, which is a third catcher," manager Dan Jennings said of Telis. "The fact that he is a switch-hitter, he gives us that bat off the bench and a double [switch] option."

Ege split time between Class A Advanced High Desert and Double-A Frisco this season. In 31 2/3 innings for Frisco, he is 3-2 with a 0.85 ERA.
