Marlins claim righty Ogando off waivers from Phils

MIAMI -- The Marlins, in the market for bullpen depth, claimed hard-throwing right-hander Nefi Ogando off waivers from the Phillies on Wednesday afternoon. The 26-year-old made his Major League debut and appeared in four big league games in 2015.

A native of the Dominican Republic, Ogando initially signed as an undrafted free agent with the Red Sox in 2010, and he has spent the past six seasons in the Minor Leagues.

Ogando made his MLB debut for the Phillies on Sept. 9. In four relief appearances, he gave up four earned runs in four innings (9.00 ERA).

In 2015, Ogando pitched at Double-A and Triple-A, and he combined to throw 63 innings of relief in 45 games, with a 2.86 ERA. He struck out 55 and walked 31.

According to Fangraphs, Ogando's average fastball velocity was 95.5 mph. He also throws a slider and changeup.
