Marlins sign RHP Carlos Marmol to one-year contract

MIAMI - The Miami Marlins today announced that they have signed free agent right-handed relief pitcher Carlos Marmol to a one-year contract. The announcement was made by Marlins President of Baseball Operations Michael Hill.

"With the signing of Carlos, we add a proven reliever with experience in the late innings," said Hill. "We are thrilled to add a player of his quality to an already deep bullpen."

Marmol, 31, split the 2013 season between the Cubs and Dodgers organizations, combining to go 2-4 with a 4.41 ERA (49.0 IP/24 ER) in 52 appearances. The right-hander finished the season by recording scoreless outings in 18 of his final 19 appearances with Los Angeles. He made two appearances in the 2013 postseason, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings in the National League Championship Series, with five strikeouts and one walk.

Marmol, who originally signed with Chicago out of the Dominican Republic in 1999, made his Major League debut with the Cubs in 2006. An All-Star in 2008, he owns a 23-32 career mark with a 3.46 ERA and 117 saves in 504 appearances (13 starts). Since the start of the 2008 campaign, Marmol leads all relievers in appearances (426), strikeouts (575) and his .176 opponents' average ranks fifth. He has appeared in the postseason three times, appearing in the 2007 and 2008 Division Series with Chicago and the 2013 NLCS with the Dodgers.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Marmol, the Marlins designated RHP Chris Hatcher for assignment.

Marlins' pitchers and catchers are set to hold their first workout on February 16 in Jupiter, Fla., and the first full-squad workout will be on Feb. 20.
