Marvin Miller Man of the Year finalists are heroes off the field, too

Dee Gordon, Adam Jones and David Robertson, the three finalists for the 2015 Marvin Miller Man of the Year award, are heroes off the field, too.

The Marvin Miller Man of the Year is given to the player who most inspires others through his on-field performances and contributions to his community and has been part of the Players Choice Awards balloting since Eric Davis won the prestigious honor in 2000.

The Players Choice Awards, in which the players recognize each other's excellence on and off the field, have been presented by the Major League Baseball Players Association since 1992, with the Players Trust providing more than $4 million in charitable grants to causes selected by the winning players.

The Marvin Miller Award winner will receive a $50,000 grant from the Trust that will go to a charity or charities he selects.

In 2015, Jones hosted a clinic with the MLBPA for inner city youth in West Baltimore following the unrest the city experienced this past spring. The Orioles center fielder provided hands-on instruction and encouragement to kids from James Mosher Little League. He has also participated in events to benefit the YMCA of Central Maryland, the Boys and Girls Club of Baltimore and Reviving Baseball in the Inner Cities.

Robertson, along with his wife, Erin, founded High Socks for Hope after tornadoes devastated his hometown of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in 2011. The mission is to lend support to charities and organizations helping those affected by tragedies and to provide humanitarian services for individuals in need. High Socks for Hope has also provided aid to those affected by the tornado in Moore, Oklahoma, as well as individuals in New York who were affected by Hurricane Sandy.

While with the Dodgers, Gordon assisted with the LA Fund for Public Education's School Fuel program to provide breakfast for more than 400,000 students in the Los Angeles Unified School District. In the offseason, Gordon participated in a Fitbit Celebrity Challenge to raise awareness and money for cardiovascular health. The NL batting champion also supports the Belchman Foundation to raise money and awareness for Parkinson's disease.

The winner will be announced during the hour-long 2015 Players Choice Awards show on MLB Network on Monday (Nov. 9) at 8 p.m. ET.  The program will be presented by MLB The Show™ and sponsored by Majestic Athletic.

The winners and finalists for each award were selected by players on Sept. 16 in league-wide balloting conducted under the supervision of accounting firm KPMG.
