New Tiger Boyd set to start on Wednesday
Left-hander was acquired in deal that sent Price to Toronto
DETROIT -- The Tigers won't have to wait long to get a look at recent trade acquisition Matt Boyd. The team announced Tuesday afternoon that the 24-year-old left-hander will be called up from Triple-A Toledo to make his Tigers debut in a start against the Royals on Wednesday, six days after joining the team as part of the trade that sent David Price to Toronto.
No corresponding roster move will be announced until after Tuesday's game.
Boyd, Detroit's No. 8 prospect, will take the rotation spot of No. 4 prospect Buck Farmer. Farmer took a comebacker off his left knee on Saturday at Baltimore, but stayed in the game and said he'd be fine. Though Farmer showed positive signs, he left without completing six innings for the fourth time in as many big league outings this year.
Farmer could end up sticking around in the bullpen, at least as an insurance option in case Alfredo Simon is unable to make his scheduled start Saturday. If the Tigers option Farmer to Toledo, they couldn't recall him for 10 days unless there's a disabled list move involved.
Boyd made two starts for the Blue Jays earlier this summer, allowing 11 runs on 15 hits over 6 2/3 innings, including five home runs. The bulk of the damage came against the Red Sox on July 2, when he allowed seven runs on six hits without retiring a batter. Major League success would be the final step in a whirlwind season that has seen Boyd post a 9-2 record and a 1.65 ERA in 19 starts between Double-A New Hampshire, Triple-A Buffalo and Toledo.
