Matt Harvey Off to Fast Start

Two starts into the 2013 campaign, New York Mets righty Matt Harvey has baseball buzzing after a pair of dominating performances.

The 23-year-old has surrendered just four hits and one run in his 14 innings pitched, with 19 strikeouts and four walks.

Harvey joins a storied list of Mets pitching draftees who have been thrust under the microscope with lofty expectations at a young age.

It’s too early to tell whether he’ll vault into the class of Tom Seaver, Dwight Gooden and Nolan Ryan, or fade into obscurity a la Bobby J. Jones, Bill Pulsipher, Jason Isringhausen, Paul Wilson, Scott Kazmir…and now I’m depressed.

Harvey, though, is leading the youth movement that will hopefully turn around our fortunes in Flushing. If prospects Zack Wheeler and Noah Syndergaard are a fraction of the hype, the light at the end of the tunnel is awfully close and it won’t be long before our N.L. East rivals are catching a tan in our sunshine.

For now, let’s just enjoy Harvey’s breakout season and watch him continue to rack up those K’s. Let’s go Mets!
