Harvey sees Dr. Andrews; Mets to give update Tuesday

NEW YORK -- Mets pitcher Matt Harvey received a second opinion on his injured right elbow Monday morning from Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Fla. Harvey flew back to New York following the appointment, and the Mets said in a statement that they expected to provide more information Tuesday.

Since late last month, when Mets doctors first diagnosed him with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, Harvey has publicly held out hope that he can avoid Tommy John surgery. That operation would sideline him for all of next season.

"Everything feels fine," Harvey said last week. "My arm feels great, and I'm still optimistic about everything. But I'm not a doctor, so we'll see what happens."

In his first full big league season, Harvey finished 9-5 with a 2.27 ERA and 191 strikeouts in 178 1/3 innings. He was a leading National League Cy Young Award contender before suffering the injury.
