Mets acquire outfielder Eric Young Jr.

FLUSHING, N.Y., June 18, 2013 - The New York Mets today announced the club acquired outfielder Eric Young, Jr. from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for righthanded pitcher Collin McHugh. In order to make room on the 40-man roster, outfielder Collin Cowgill was designated for assignment. The Mets also optioned righthanded pitcher Zack Wheeler to Las Vegas (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League.

Young, Jr., 28, hit .242 (40-165) with one home run, six RBI and eight stolen bases in 57 games this season before the Rockies designated him for assignment on June 12. The 5-10, 180-pound native of New Brunswick, NJ is a career .261 (200-766) hitter with 70 stolen bases in 313 major league games, all with Colorado.

McHugh, 25, went 0-1 with a 10.29 ERA (eight earned runs/7.0 innings) in three games, one start, for the Mets this season. The club designated him for assignment on June 15.

Cowgill, 27, hit .180 (11-61) in 23 games for the Mets this season.
