Matz stretches out in second rehab start

Mets left-hander Steven Matz made his second rehab start for Class A St. Lucie on Thursday, tossing 41 pitches (25 strikes) in 2 2/3 innings.

Matz is recovering from a partially torn left lat muscle. He allowed four hits and one earned run in the outing, while walking one and striking out one.

"I was just trying to fill up the strike zone and stretch out the 40-plus pitches as much as I could," Matz told Newsday.

Matz threw five curveballs and five changeups to go along with the 31 fastballs that ranged from 91-94 mph.

Matz is expected to pitch again on Tuesday for Double-A Binghamton, and he will throw 60 pitches, according to the Binghamton Press & Sun Bulletin.

The southpaw has made two Major League starts this year (13 2/3 innings), posting a 1.32 ERA with 14 strikeouts and five walks.
