Mets release injured starter Marcum

Unlikely to pitch again in 2013, right-hander finishes with 1-10 record

NEW YORK -- The Mets announced Tuesday they have placed pitcher Shaun Marcum on waivers for purpose of giving him his unconditional release. The team did so after receiving confirmation that Marcum is unlikely to pitch this season.

Marcum, who signed a one-year contract with the Mets during the offseason that was worth $4 million plus incentives, was placed on the disabled list on July 9 and underwent shoulder surgery after he was diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome. He had experienced numbness and tingling in his right hand during his last two starts.

Before the surgery, Marcum was 1-10 with a 5.29 ERA in 14 games and 12 starts. In his final start of the season on July 6 in Milwaukee, Marcum allowed six runs on 11 hits over five innings.

The shoulder surgery concluded Marcum's injury-marred season with the Mets. He was placed on the disabled list on March 31 -- Opening Day -- with right biceps tendinitis. Marcum didn't make his first start until April 27.
