Mets select Catcher Kevin Plawecki from Purdue University with the 35th pick

The New York Mets today announced the selection of catcher Kevin Plawecki from Purdue University with the 35th pick of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft.

Plawecki, 21, who bats and throws righthanded, hit .359 (80-223) with seven home runs and 47 RBI in 59 games for the Boilermakers this year.  The 6-1, 215-pound native of Carmel, IN was named the Big Ten Player of the Year and the Big Ten Tournament Most Outstanding Player.  Plawecki is one of the three finalists for the Johnny Bench Award, given annually to the top NCAA Division I catcher.

Plawecki struck out eight times all season and was one of two Purdue players to start every game.  He was named First Team All-Big Ten for the second consecutive year, becoming only the third Boilermaker in school history to be a two-time First Team honoree.
