Mets Select Dominic Smith From California's Serra High School With 11th Overall Pick In 2013 First-Year Player Draft

The New York Mets today announced the selection of first baseman Dominic Smith from Serra High School (CA) with the 11th pick of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft.

Smith, 17, who bats and throws lefthanded, hit .493 (33-67) with seven home runs and 38 RBI in 27 games to help Serra to the CIF D3 title this season. The 6-1, 200-pound native of Los Angeles, CA also appeared in six games on the mound for the Cavaliers, going 4-0 with a 2.08 ERA (nine earned runs/30.1 innings) and 44 strikeouts.

Smith was named a 2013 Rawlings preseason All-American after hitting .551 with nine home runs and 49 RBI in 25 games as a junior in 2012. He earned First-Team All-CIF all four years at Serra.

Smith went 2-4 with a double and an RBI at the 2012 Under Armour All-America Game last summer.

Smith, who committed to the University of Southern California, is the fifth position player taken in the first round by the Mets since 2008. He joins first baseman Ike Davis (2008), infielder Reese Havens (2008), outfielder Brandon Nimmo (2011) and infielder Gavin Cecchini (2012). The Mets took righthanded pitcher Matt Harvey in 2010.
